Athens City Guide
About Athens:
Step into the ancient city of Athens, Greece’s capital and largest metropolis. With a history spanning nearly 3,400 years, Athens is the 'cradle of Western civilization' and democracy's birthplace. Additionally, it's where the Olympic Games first kicked off in 776 BC and made a grand return in 1896 and 2004. From Plato's Academy to Aristotle's Lyceum, the past meets the present in every corner of this iconic city that is now a bustling semi-tropical paradise.
Where to Stay:
-
City Center: Stay in the heart of Athens, where history and modern life collide. Between Omonia, Syntagma, and Monastiraki squares, you’ll find political hotspots, trendy boutiques, galleries, and top-notch restaurants. Perfect for easy access to all the must-see attractions.
-
Plaka: Nestled right under the Acropolis, Plaka is a charming maze of medieval streets, Byzantine churches, and quirky museums. It's a pedestrian paradise filled with character and small, inviting hotels.
-
Kolonaki: Beneath Lycabettus Hill lies posh Kolonaki, home to high-end boutiques, art galleries, and gourmet dining. If luxury and safety are your priorities, this neighborhood is your go-to.
-
Monastiraki: Close to the Agora and Roman Forum, Monastiraki is a shopper’s haven with daily flea markets and bustling streets. Ideal for those on a shopping spree.
-
Kifissia: Rub shoulders with the elite in Kifissia, known for its quiet, tree-lined streets, neoclassical mansions, and vibrant nightlife. This chic suburb offers a blend of tranquility and excitement.
-
Apollo Coast: For beach lovers, the Apollo Coast is just a hop away from the city center. Enjoy sun-soaked days at seaside resorts with all the perks—restaurants, clubs, and shopping right by the beach.
Places of Interest:

-
Syntagma Square: Kick off your adventure at Syntagma Square, home to the 1840s Parliament building. Don’t miss the hourly changing of the guard, reminiscent of Buckingham Palace. It’s also a gateway to Athens' museum mile, featuring the Benaki Museum, Museum of Cycladic Art, and Byzantine Museum.

-
Acropolis: No visit to Athens is complete without exploring the Acropolis. Perched 150m above sea level, this UNESCO World Heritage site includes the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Propylaea. Discover ancient carvings and friezes at the Acropolis Museum.
-
Agora: Wander through the Agora, the ancient commercial and civic hub where Socrates and Plato once philosophized. Highlights include the world’s oldest theater, Dionysos, and the Stoa of Attalos, now a museum brimming with ancient artifacts.
-
National Archaeological Museum: Dive into Greece's rich history at the National Archaeological Museum, home to treasures like 2000BC figurines and Santorini frescoes. One visit might not be enough!
-
Jewish Museum: Explore the Jewish Museum on Nikis Street, showcasing the vital role of the Jewish community in Greek society from the 18th century to today.
-
Lycabettus Hill: Take a tram or hike up Lycabettus Hill for stunning sunset views over Athens. At the top, you'll find a charming white church that lights up at night.
-
Beaches: Swim in the Aegean Sea at Athens’ Apollo Coast, featuring gorgeous beaches like Glyfada, Votsalakia, and Voula.
Getting Around:
Fly into Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, 20 miles (33 km) southeast of the city. The Athens Metro, public buses, suburban rail, and taxis connect you to the city center. Beware of gypsy cabs! Most of Athens’ famous sites are walkable from the city center, and the extensive public transport system—buses, trolley buses, mini buses, taxis, and the underground metro—makes getting around a breeze. Renting a car isn’t recommended due to heavy traffic and parking costs.

Best Time to Visit:
Athens enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long, warm summers and mild winters. Visit from mid-March to May or from Sept to early November for pleasant weather perfect for sightseeing, with highs of 61F to 78F (16C to 25C). Summers (June to August) can soar above 100°F (38°C), making it prime tourist season with lower hotel rates. Winters (November to February) are cooler and windier, averaging 52°F (11°C).
